VCMS Piano Quartet – Tuesday May 17, 2022 at 1:00PM

Four phenomenal local chamber musicians comes together to bring an electrifying Late-Romantic program befitting the Vancouver Chamber Music Society’s finale performance at the Highlands United Church in North Vancouver. The concert opens with Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Minor, Op.60. Nicknamed the “Werther Quartet” after Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther for the piece’s melodramatic flair. Suspense and surprise characterize the music starting with the opening movement’s violent rhythmic ostinatos contrasted against passages of Brahms’ majestic lyricism. Equally dramatic and even more sensuous is Bridge’s Phantasie for Piano Quartet in F-Sharp Minor, H. 94. British composer and chamber music scholar, Dr. Ernest Walker, gives the piece a glowing recommendation: “I know of few things in British Chamber Music more satisfying than Bridge’s Phantasy for Piano Quartet”.
