Deputy Prime Minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland said that the Bank of Canada’s Wednesday decision to hold the interest rate at five per cent is a “welcome relief.” She added that as finance minister, she “fully respect[s]” the institution’s independence as it worked to return inflation to target.
