The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the country’s first over-the-counter daily oral contraceptive to be available without a prescription from a health-care provider. The approved tablet called Opill contains the progestin norgestrel, which the FDA said is expected to be more effective than other over-the-counter contraceptive methods that are currently available, including condoms, in preventing unintended pregnancy.
