Nine days after receiving abdominal surgery to repair a hernia and remove painful scarring, Pope Francis was discharged from Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy on Friday. The 86-year-old left the institute in a wheelchair, smiling and waving to well-wishers. On the pope’s health status, his surgeon, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, said he’s “better than before.”
