Speaking during a parliamentary hearing on Canada-China relations on Monday, Liberal MP Jean Yip asked international business professor Ari Van Assche from HEC Montreal if he thinks retaliatory measures will follow Foreign Minister Melanie Joly’s announcement that Zhao Wei, a diplomat at the Chinese consulate in Toronto, has been declared “persona non grata” in Canada. Van Assche said that he was “sure” China will consider how to demonstrate their disappointment in the situation and guessed that there might be “some retaliation.”
