Canada’s auditor general, Karen Hogan, said that while COVID-19 benefits rolled out by the federal government to those who lost work due to the pandemic helped the economy rebound, not enough has been done to recover overpayments. In a report released, she said an estimated $4.6 billion had been paid to people not eligible, with another $27.4 billion that should be investigated. She added that the Canada Revenue Agency has only collected $2.3 billion in voluntary repayments.
