China on Tuesday responded to statements by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a Global News investigation in which sources alleged China had been targeting Canada with a vast campaign of foreign interference, which included funding a clandestine network of at least 11 federal candidates running in the 2019 election. “China is not interested in Canada’s internal affairs,” said spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Tuesday. “The relationship between countries can only be built on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, and China-Canada relations are no exception,” Lijian added.
