The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that Americans have the right to carry firearms in public, voting 6-3 to strike down a New York law requiring people to demonstrate a particular need for carrying a gun to get a licence to carry one in public. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the Constitution protects “an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.”
