U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland was in Buffalo, N.Y., on Wednesday where he spoke about the Department of Justice (DOJ) charging the accused in the Tops supermarket mass shooting with federal hate crimes which could include the death penalty. “The complaint we have filed today charges Payton Gendron with 10 counts of committing a hate crime resulting in death. Three counts of committing a hate crime with an intent to kill. Ten counts of using a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a crime of violence. And three counts of using and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence,” Garland said.
