A sentence that amounts to life in prison without parole is no longer on the table for those who commit heinous crimes such as murder. The Supreme Court of Canada has declared unconstitutional a 2011 provision that allowed a judge, in the event of multiple murders, to impose a life sentence and parole ineligibility periods of 25 years to be served consecutively for each murder. Now, a number of Alberta families and those who represent the accused want to know what it means for their own cases. Morgan Black reports.
