World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said Tuesday that as of May 1, at least 228 probable cases of child hepatitis had been reported from 20 countries. He also said more than 50 additional cases are under investigation. Health officials are probing the increase in severe cases of hepatitis — inflammation of the liver — in young children that has resulted in at least one death.
