Russia-Ukraine conflict: Lviv Today editor on pronunciation, spelling of geographical names – and what it means to Ukranians

Lee Reaney, the editor of Lviv Today and a former Saskatoon resident, spoke with Global News about why language and the pronunciation of certain words involving Ukraine are important to Ukrainians. For example, he said, when someone says “the Ukraine” instead of “Ukraine,” it takes away the country’s autonomy. He also spoke about the spelling of the city “Kyiv” and why spelling it “Kiev” can “wrankle” some Ukrainians.
