Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby announced on Monday that the U.S. had put up to 8,500 troops on heightened alert in order to have military members prepared to deploy if needed. While no final decisions had been made on deployments, the majority of the 8,500 troops are solely reserved for the NATO Response Force, which has not yet been activated.
