White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Monday that the U.S. would not send any diplomats or officials to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, effectively staging a diplomatic boycott. She added athletes would still be able to participate, as the administration did not want to penalize those who had trained for the event. Psaki said by not sending officials, it would show China the Olympics are not “business as usual.”
