Fresh lava coming from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano reached the sea on Nov. 16, said the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan). Since eruptions began on Sept. 19, lava flows have covered more than 1,000 hectares and destroyed 2,618 buildings, said the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program.
