Olaf Scholz, the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate that is poised to succeed Angela Merkel as the country’s next chancellor, said on Monday that he expected to be able to form a coalition government with the Greens and the Liberal Free Democrats (FDP) by Christmas. Scholz said a first priority for the new government would be building a “stronger and more sovereign” European Union.
