A Texas law passed in May took effect on Wednesday, effectively making it almost impossible for a woman to be able to get an abortion in the state. The law makes it illegal to end a pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat is heard—usually at about six weeks and before some women even know they’re pregnant. The bill bars enforcement by state officials, which are normally the people named in lawsuits, and instead allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps someone get an abortion.
