Defence attorney Eric Nelson said during his opening statement in the trial against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Monday that Chauvin “did exactly what he had been trained to do over the course of his 19-year career,” adding that “the use of force is not attractive but it is a necessary component of policing.” Chauvin has been charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.
