Merrick Garland was ceremonially sworn in on Thursday by U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris as the Biden administration’s attorney general. Garland was former president Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, though he was not given a hearing by the then GOP-controlled Senate. The new attorney general was officially sworn in earlier in the day by assistant attorney general Lee Lofthus earlier in the day, with his oath to office before Harris a ceremonial swearing-in.
