The U.S. Capitol was shut down for a brief period on Monday morning after dark smoke began to drift over the Capitol building shortly after 10 a.m. eastern time. Video captured by Global’s Jackson Proskow shows an emergency warning blaring across Capitol grounds as the smoke grew. The fire was reportedly from a nearby homeless encampment, according to local fire officials. Washington, D.C. is on high alert just two days before the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden.
