President-elect Joe Biden nominated retired 4-star Army General Lloyd Austin as defense secretary on Wednesday, who if confirmed would become the first African-American to lead the Department of Defense. Biden praised Austin’s barrier-breaking career, and called him a “soldier’s leader.” But each man addressed concerns, including from Democrats, about waiving the seven-year retirement rule for a former uniformed officer to serve as defense secretary. They reasserted support for civilian control of the military.
