Members of parliament started Monday’s Question Period with a moment of silence in honour of Samuel Paty, the teacher beheaded in Paris on Oct. 16 by an 18-year old Chechen refugee after showing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed to his students. The incident sparked anger among both Islamic societies across the world and among French citizens defending the teacher’s right to freedom of speech.
