George Floyd memorial: North Carolina sheriff says police need to recognize ‘we are part of the problem’

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin spoke Saturday at the memorial for George Floyd, a Black man who died while in police custody on Memorial Day, and stressed that while there are “a lot of good police officers in this world,” law enforcement cannot allow “one or two per cent doing the mess that we’re doing right now.” He said police need to be able to say “we are part of the problem” and recognize they don’t have the authority to “bully” because they have a badge and a gun. Peterkin also said that police around the world need to do some “house cleaning” and that if officers see problems within the force, “get it out of your house.”
