George Floyd death: Minneapolis police chief defends right to protest, criticizes violent demonstrations

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said on Thursday that he would allow people to exercise their right to protest, heal and grieve in response to the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died while in police custody after an officer knelt on his neck until he became unresponsive. However, Arradondo stressed he recognizes there is a “deficit of hope” that his own department has contributed to but said he would not allow people to commit acts that are criminal, from looting businesses to setting buildings on fire.
