The United Nations’ top human rights official Michelle Bachelet said Monday that rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as those surrounding movement and police checks, should not be used “as a weapon” against opposition, to control the population, or for a government to extend its time in power. She said police should practice force during the crisis only “when strictly necessary.”
