The U.K.’s business secretary, Alok Sharma, said on Friday that the current social distancing measures will remain in place for at least the next three weeks.
He said there are five conditions that must be satisfied before considering it safe to adjust any of the current measures.
First: protecting the NHS’ ability to cope, and make sure the health system is able to provide sufficient critical care for patients across the country.
Second: seeing a sustained and consistent fall in the daily death rate from COVID-19 in the U.K.
Third: having reliable data showing that the rate of infection is decreasing to manageable levels.
Fourth: being confident that the range of operational challenges including testing capacity and PPE are in hand with supply able to meet future demand.
Fifth: being confident that any adjustment to the current measures will not risk a second peak of infection that overwhelms the NHS.
