Coronavirus outbreak: Brazil’s homeless face many risks amid COVID-19

For thousands of homeless people in Sao Paulo, Brazil, an already perilous situation has become dire as the population adjusts to life on the street in the age of the novel coronavirus. In an area known as “Crackland” due to its reputation for selling drugs, social distancing is a luxury as homeless residents congregate close together. Many find themselves risking their health by crowding into long lines for food distribution. At the Sao Miguel Arcanjo Church, volunteers try to help by offering squirts of hand sanitizer, but it’s a small measure against a mountain of challenges facing the population.
