COVID-19: CDC chief says U.S. patient who died may have contracted illness from ‘community spread’

Editor’s note: The CDC and Washington State officials confirmed the first death of coronavirus in the United States is a male in his 50s. President Trump stated during an earlier news conference the death was a female.

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Saturday that the person in Washington state, who was the first confirmed death in the country from COVID-19, may have contracted the illness from “community spread.” He said that there’s no evidence in the case that shows no link to travel or contact.
