Bushfires on Kangaroo Island were estimated to have killed 25,000 koalas by January 7. In an effort to help some of the local marsupials during the catastrophic events, local man Micah Lovegrove and his family set up an impromptu rescue operation. Assessing the area where his uncle’s house had once stood after bushfires ripped through the South Australian island, Lovegrove and family found a koala huddled beside a tree nearby the destroyed property on January 2.
