On day five of the impeachment hearings of U.S. President Donald Trump, David Holmes, counselor for political affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, stated that while Gordon Sondland, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, was on a phone call with Trump, he confirmed that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky would begin the investigation that was requested.
