Indian Kashmir Valley showed hints of returning to regular life amid heavy security with limited local movement on Aug. 21. Armed policemen were positioned at key areas of the city to prevent any protests or any incidents of violence, after the Indian government moved to scrap the special status of the region and allow non-residents to buy property there. Mobile and internet connections were still blacked-out, however many landline telephones have been restored. While most parents have kept their children at home, fearing unrest, many students were seen returning to an Islamic religious school after restrictions were partially eased.
