A “meteor” spotted streaking across the New Zealand sky Saturday evening, January 5, was likely a defunct Russian military satellite returning to Earth. The re-entry created quite the show at a cricket match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Mount Maunganui, where several observers captured video as the object broke apart on its way down.
