New discovery could lay groundwork for effective alcoholism treatment

Texas researchers analyzed the DNA of more than 100-thousand people who drank socially and found a genetic variant that suppresses the thirst for alcohol. They hope the findings could someday be used in the development of drugs to regulate alcohol consumption, which is linked to various cancers, liver damage and heart disease.
