“Just to live”: Displaced Gazans question what lies ahead of new year

In the wake of the new year, Gazans expressed hope for stability and peace in the embattled territory but questioned whether 2025 will bring about any change.
In the second winter of the war in Gaza, the weather has added an extra element of suffering to thousands of people already displaced, often multiple times.
In Khan Younis, dozens of tents have been blown away or flooded by the strong winds and rain, leaving families struggling to repair the damage. “We still don’t know what our fate is or where we will be relocated next,” displaced Palestinian Samira Al-Ashqar said.
“A year passed and here we are starting a new year, and we hope that we can live like anyone else in the world, like people in other countries,” displaced Palestinian Mohammed Woloud added. “There’s nothing left to cry over. All we are asking for is to live, and that’s it.”
Israel’s campaign in Gaza has killed more than 45,500 Palestinians, according to Palestinian health officials, turning the enclave into a wasteland of destroyed buildings while efforts for a ceasefire appear to remain unsuccessful.
