Francine weakened into a tropical depression Thursday morning over south-central Mississippi, soaking that state and its neighbours in heavy rain after it slammed into the Louisiana coast Wednesday evening as a dangerous Category 2 hurricane. But Francine quickly lost much of its punch as it moved over land, and it was downgraded to a tropical storm late Wednesday night.
