As Canada’s men’s soccer team get ready to take on Uruguay tonight at the Copa America, they are also keeping an eye on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Vancouver will be one of the host cities. The projected cost for B.C. to hold such an event was initially projected between $240 and $260 million. That number ending up doubling to potentially upwards of $581 million.
The province says the tournament could bring in up to a billion dollars in revenue. However, not everyone agrees this is a win for the city. A recent poll finding 61 per cent of Vancouverites are not in favour of hosting the games. Joining us is Kirk LaPointe, columnist at Glacier Media.
