The federal government’s bail reforms came into effect earlier this year. Some of the new measures includes an expansion of the reverse-onus provisions for repeat offenders—where the accused now has to argue to the court why they should be granted bail, instead of the Crown having to prove why bail should be denied. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson speaks with Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth (President of Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police) and RCMP Deputy Commissioner Jodie Boudreau about the impacts of the bail reforms on the front lines for police.
