The government of Brazil’s southernmost state Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of public calamity as the death toll as a result of severe flooding climbed to 29 on Thursday. The storms, which have caused the most devastation in the state in recent years, have left 60 people missing and 10,242 people displaced across 134 cities.
