In Taiwan, millions of voters have rebuffed China and elected a presidential candidate from the incumbent Democratic People’s Party for an unprecedented third term in office. Thousands gathered to celebrate the DPP’s win today which will extend its eight-year term in the presidential office. Lai Ching-te, the party’s vice-president since 2020 will be taking over the top job and will look to lead the island country through its testy relationship with Beijing. David Akin reports.
