On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s emergency bill to send asylum seekers to Rwanda narrowly avoided defeat in parliament, winning its first vote in the House of Commons by a margin of 44 votes after a day of negotiations. Sunak’s plan to revive the controversial proposal faced opposition after the UK Supreme Court ruled last month that Rwanda was an unsafe place to send those arriving in small boats on England’s southern coast. Prior to this, opposition leader Keir Starmer said he expected the government to win the vote but called for an election if they did not.
