Israel has unleashed one of its largest strikes yet on Hamas since the end of what was called a ‘humanitarian pause’, one that’s also deepening the suffering in Gaza in what’s already been called an apocalyptic situation by the UN’s human rights commissioner. Crystal Goomansingh reports. Israel’s envoy to the United Nations is thanking U.S. President Joe Biden after the United States blocked a Security Council resolution that would have called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Thirteen permanent member countries including China, Russia, and France all voted in favour of the resolution put forth by the United Arab Emirates demanding an immediate ceasefire, diplomatically isolating Washington, which backed its ally Israel with the veto.
