U.S. law that enabled warrantless surveillance set to expire, FBI director says it could hinder national security

Warrantless surveillance powers authorized under the FBI are set to expire on Dec. 31 and the agency’s director warns it could threaten U.S. national security against countering terrorist threats. Section 702, however, has been widely criticized by Republicans for allegedly violating U.S. citizens’ Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches.
