In Kelowna, the Okanagan Heritage Museum and the Okanagan Military Museum will honour some of the inspiring women who have made history around the valley.
“Being International Women’s Day, we thought it was an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the inspiring and unconventional women who have lived in the Okanagan,” said Allison Wardle, education and programming assistant at Kelowna Museums.
The museums have put together a scavenger hunt of sorts to showcase some of these women.
“We have this sheet ‘Who is this lady?’ And there are bios about different women around both the Okanagan Heritage Museum and the Military Museum,” Wardle said. “They will have to use these sheets and the bios to figure out which woman completed which wonderful skill or talent.”
There is also a timeline created that spans several generations.
“It showcases some of the challenges, triumphs and achievements from women throughout B.C. and Canada,” Wardle said.
This includes cards listing women like Grace Annie Lockhart, who was the first Canadian woman to be awarded a university degree in 1875.
“We couldn’t include every single achievement, so we have some blank cards where they can add their own date or event that they think is really important to them,” Wardle said.
Visit the Kelowna Museums on Mar. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to explore and celebrate the history of the Okanagan women on International Women’s Day.
Admission is free of charge, but donations are always encouraged.
