Charges have been laid in connection with a fatal 2018 pedestrian crash in Maple Ridge.
Kelly Sandoval, a mother of four, was struck by a pickup during a truck rampage on Feb. 1, 2018 and passed away almost two months later due to “alleged complications to the injuries sustained from the crash,” RCMP said Thursday.
RCMP said Travis Pare, a 35-year-old man from Mission, B.C., was arrested and now faces one count of criminal negligence causing death; one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death; and two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
The incident unfolded when police received a call about a black Dodge pickup truck near the McDonalds in the 23900-block of Dewdney Trunk Road around 3 p.m.
The driver first left a parking stall and backed into a parked vehicle before he drove forward into a drive-thru, hit barricades, then jumped the curbed laneway and hit a bus shelter, shattering the glass.
According to a GoFundMe page set up at the time, the truck then started driving toward Sandoval and her sons.
One of the sons managed to evade the truck’s path; Sandoval threw the other son out of the way, the GoFundMe page said.
“She sacrificed herself to ensure the safety of her child,” the page read.
Pare appeared in court on Wednesday and was released on bail with conditions.
