Stolen snowmobiles recovered after driver flees RIDE check and crashes pickup: OPP

A Kitchener, Ont., man faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing from an OPP RIDE program and crashing his vehicle in Minden Hills on Monday night.

Around 8:30 p.m., Haliburton Highlands OPP were conducting a RIDE program on Highway 35 when they approached a pickup with a snowmobile trailer.

Police say they suspected a Highway Traffic Act offence and asked the driver to pull over.

However, police allege the vehicle fled and then collided with a guardrail and a tree a short distance away.

OPP say the driver then fled on foot but injured himself. He was arrested and taken to hospital.

Police learned the snowmobile trailer and two snowmobiles inside it had been reported stolen. A third snowmobile in the back of the pickup had been reported stolen two days earlier from Drumbo, Ont.

Daniel Litschgy, 34, has been charged with:

  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Driving a motor vehicle – no licence
  • Using licence plates not authorized for a vehicle
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • No red light on rear of trailer
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and under $5,000 (one count each).

He was held in custody for a scheduled bail hearing on Monday.
