One witness said the driver was on his third trip hauling a load of crushed stone when he tried to curve this steep cliff and lost control.

“When he lost half his load, the truck flipped,” explained Jean-Louis Cauchon.

Police spokesman Louis-Philippe Bibeau says an inspection of the vehicle will be necessary to determine whether speed or faulty brakes could have caused the accident.

Residents say they are not surprised by the accident. Valérie Lapointe said she’s surprised it hasn’t happened before. She said another time, a truck with a heavy load failed to climb the sloped street and fell back down at full speed towards her own yard.

Fortunately, no one was injured that time either, but “it’s really dangerous,” she said.

“I don’t want to generalize, but there are lots of trucks that don’t stop and go very fast,” she added.

She said she hopes there’s  a positive outcome to this accident: that the trucking route will be moved to a safer location.
