My son Kurt went with his 5th-grade class on a field trip to the Ontario Legislature at Queen’s Park.
His class got to witness what our provincial leaders do on a daily basis up close.
I asked him what stood out about his trip to the ‘ledge.
My son was impressed with the pomp and circumstance of the legislature — “very official,” he said.
With the uniforms and the ringing of the bells, he noticed the high level of security — something that was absent when I went as a kid.
They enjoyed watching the Parliament debate, he said, adding that it got pretty feisty.
He laughingly said there was lots of yelling, booing and thumping on desks, pointing out that it didn’t look like Premier Kathleen Wynne was winning.
And he did notice she isn’t wearing glasses anymore.
I asked him if his class was better behaved than the politicians.
“He said, ‘Of course, you had to be, or you would get thrown out of the gallery.”
“Would you like to do that?” I asked.
“No,” he answered quickly.
Maybe our leaders could use a lesson from the kids.
