Relief is in sight for the homeless in Vernon as a result of an announcement between the city and the province.
They announced today that Vernon will be receiving $11 million for the construction of two modular-housing projects.
The provincial government says 53 supportive housing units will be constructed for people transitioning out of homelessness on land owned by BC housing at the intersection of 27th Avenue and 35th Street.
The units will be self-contained with personal kitchens and washrooms and will be able to accommodate nearly 100 people.
The province says a new permanent modular shelter will also be constructed at 2300 43rd Street — an expansion to the current homeless shelter.
Both projects will be operated by the John Howard Society of the North Okanagan.
Kelowna is working on a similar housing project but no announcement has been made.
