A pedestrian has been struck and killed in Surrey Friday morning.

It happened just after 7 a.m. on Scott Road near 78 Avenue. Police say the elderly woman was not in a marked crosswalk at the time.

The initial investigation has revealed that the vehicle was travelling northbound on 120 Street when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing from the west side to the east side. The driver of the vehicle did remain on scene and, along with passersby, rendered medical assistance until emergency first responders arrived on scene.

“The elderly woman was struck in the fast lane of the northbound lane of Scott Road. Investigators believe impairment and speed are not factors in this crash,” said Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann.

“Unfortunately first responders aren’t able to revive here and she was pronounced deceased at scene.”

The intersection remains closed and there is still a heavy police presence in the area.

Investigators will be looking into whether poor visibility and distraction were among the possible contributing factors in the accident.

The northbound lanes of 120 Street, between 76 Avenue and 80 Avenue are closed, and there is only one lane southbound between the same points. The public are requested to avoid the area until further notice.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
