Big Okanagan announcement from Parks Canada coming

It looks like there’s going to be a national park in the south Okanagan — at least judging from the politician heavy-weights who will make an announcement Friday in Osoyoos.

A park has long been proposed for the area which is home to several threatened species, but the previous Liberal provincial government was not a supporter.

The idea has divided area residents over concerns about losing recreational opportunities, such as hunting, and the possible impact on ranchers.

The federal government minister responsible for Parks Canada will be at the Friday announcement.

So will B.C’s Environment Minister and the Osoyoos Indian band chief.

In July, the new provincial government indicated the creation of a south Okanagan national park was getting closer to reality.
